James Donaldson on Mental Health - Men’s Mental Health: A Focus on Suicide Prevention

James Donaldson on Mental Health - Men’s Mental Health: A Focus on Suicide Prevention

The Men’s Mental Health Forum: Preventing Suicide was held on 5 August 2024 at NSW Parliament House. It was attended by 84 participants across 61 mental health and suicide prevention organizations. Participants included people working to support men, researchers, people with lived and living experience of suicide, and suicide prevention and mental health advocates.

The forum aimed to:

- facilitate robust discussion on men’s suicide and prevention efforts
- enable the sharing of knowledge, ideas, and strategies to address men’s suicide
- help guide the direction of future suicide prevention initiatives targeting men; and
- encourage networking and collaboration between men’s suicide prevention stakeholders.

This report titled Men’s Mental Health: A Focus on Suicide Prevention presents the findings and recommended actions identified at the Forum to guide future efforts in reducing suicide among men in NSW. The recommendations are informed by the contributions of Forum participants, online submissions and supported by existing evidence and research. ?

#James Donaldson notes:
Welcome to the “next chapter” of my life… being a voice and an advocate for #mentalhealthawarenessandsuicideprevention, especially pertaining to our younger generation of students and student-athletes.
Getting men to speak up and reach out for help and assistance is one of my passions. Us men need to not suffer in silence or drown our sorrows in alcohol, hang out at bars and strip joints, or get involved with drug use.
Having gone through a recent bout of #depression and #suicidalthoughts myself, I realize now, that I can make a huge difference in the lives of so many by sharing my story, and by sharing various resources I come across as I work in this space.
