Integrated Telehealth Systems
ReplyDeleteThere is an emerging movement in health technology called telehealth. Large chip providers and technology companies are involved. This type of system is meant to provide a console with a video screen similar to a laptop computer. It connects through high speed internet to a theoretical bank of health professionals such as doctors and nurses. Peripheral devices such as glucose meters, weight scales and blood pressure cuffs can be connected to the system. The customer can then video chat with a health service professional and attend virtual appointments. This movement has not yet been widely adopted and is not marketed as a medical alert and home safety system. Ongoing development is underway to make these solutions less intimidating to seniors, more acceptable to the market place, and an infrastructure must be developed to provide a call center environment with the proper kind of staff. The systems can run as high as $2500 and $5,000 with additional monthly service fees. This segment of the industry is still working to figure out what it wants to be.
