Change is an inevitable part of life. From the minute we are born, we embark on a journey of growth and transformation. Some changes are anticipated and embraced, like starting a new job or moving to a different city. However, there are numerous changes that we have no control over, and this lack of control can have a significant impact on our mental health.
Life is full of unexpected twists and turns. Whether it's a sudden illness, the loss of a loved one, or a global pandemic, there are events that shake us to our core and force us to adapt. It's during these times when our mental well-being can be severely tested. We may experience feelings of anxiety, fear, and uncertainty as we navigate through uncharted territory.
One important aspect to remember when facing change that we can't control is to acknowledge our emotions. It's normal to feel a range of emotions during difficult times. By allowing ourselves to experience and process these emotions, we can prevent them from becoming overwhelming and detrimental to our mental health. It's essential to create a safe space for ourselves to express our emotions, whether it's through journaling, talking to a trusted friend or therapist, or engaging in creative outlets like painting or playing music.
#James Donaldson notes:Welcome to the “next chapter” of my life… being a voice and an advocate for #mentalhealthawarenessandsuicideprevention, especially pertaining to our younger generation of students and student-athletes.Getting men to speak up and reach out for help and assistance is one of my passions. Us men need to not suffer in silence or drown our sorrows in alcohol, hang out at bars and strip joints, or get involved with drug use.Having gone through a recent bout of #depression and #suicidalthoughts myself, I realize now, that I can make a huge difference in the lives of so many by sharing my story, and by sharing various resources I come across as I work in this space. #http://bit.ly/JamesMentalHealthArticleFind out more about the work I do on my 501c3 non-profit foundationwebsite www.yourgiftoflife.org Order your copy of James Donaldson's latest book,#CelebratingYourGiftofLife: From The Verge of Suicide to a Life of Purpose and Joy

Another strategy to cope with uncontrollable change is practicing self-care. When everything around us feels chaotic, it's vital to prioritize our well-being. This can include regular exercise, getting enough sleep, eating nutritious meals, and engaging in activities that bring us joy and relaxation. Engaging in self-care practices not only helps us better manage stress and anxiety but also builds resilience, enabling us to navigate through challenging times more effectively.
Maintaining a sense of control in areas where we do have power can also play a crucial role in safeguarding our mental health. When faced with overwhelming change, identify aspects of your life that you can control and focus on them. It could be managing your daily routines, setting goals, or practicing mindfulness and staying present in the current moment. By exerting control in these areas, we can regain a sense of stability and foster a more positive mindset.
Finding a support system is equally essential when confronted with uncontrollable change. Cultivating a network of family, friends, or support groups can provide a much-needed sense of belonging and offer the emotional support we need to cope with life's challenges. Sharing our experiences with others who may have faced similar situations can not only offer solace but also provide practical advice and strategies for navigating through change.
Lastly, maintaining a positive outlook can greatly impact our mental health during periods of uncertainty. Instead of dwelling on what we can't control, it's beneficial to focus on what we can control and appreciate the opportunities that change presents. Change often brings new beginnings and personal growth. By reframing our perspective and looking for the silver linings, we can transform the way we approach uncontrollable change and protect our mental well-being in the process.
