ReplyDeleteOne of the most deficient and misrepresented aspects of the medical alert industry is the monitoring service. Customers contact the monitoring center on a regular basis for reasons including chest pains, shortness of breath, trouble swallowing, tipped over wheelchair, coughing fits, adverse reactions to medications, injuries, bleeding, falls, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, rashes and numerous other situations. The majority of monitoring facilities are most deficient as it relates to training and staff. An alarm operator typically has to pass a criminal background check and a drug test. After 6 weeks of training, regardless of their lack of educational background, they are often placed on the telephones to provide response to fire, intrusion and medical emergencies. Some monitoring facilities boast that their operators are EMD certified. This means they have completed a 20 hour training on how to ask the most minimal 4 types of interrogatory questions to determine if a first responder should be notified. With the wide variety of situations and health conditions repeatedly reported by millions of customers in the marketplace, this under-qualified operator is unacceptable. Furthermore, during medical emergencies a communication is attempted with the customer and when it is reported help is being notified for the customer in need, the operator disconnects. If you're lying alone in the dark with a fractured hip, 5 to 10 minutes waiting for a paramedic can be a frightening eternity.
